The peace symbol was created in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a designer and a pacifist. He developed it specifically for a London protest march against nuclear weapons.
The design represents the letters “N” (nuclear) and “D” (disarmament) as they appear in the semaphore alphabet, which is used by sailors to communicate from a distance with flags.
It is now one of the most widely recognized designs in history.
